Fishing vessel ran onto rocks in Spain

The 35 meter long fishing vessel Santa Ana ran onto the rocks off the shore of Erbosa Island near Cabo Peñas, Spain. The fishing vessel had been fishing for mackerel in the area when it crashed onto the rocks during the early morning hours of Monday 10, 2014. The Santa Ana quickly flooded and sank. The master, Manuel Simal Sande, who was at the helm at the time, was able to abandon ship. He was rescued by the nearby fishing vessel Maresco. Manuel Simal Sande, a Galician, was taken to hospital to be treated for hypothermia and bruising, especially on his back.

The remaining eight crew on board were trapped below decks in their cabins. Two bodies were later recovered by rescuers. Patrol boats along with aircraft searched the area finding part of the hull and life rafts, but no sign of the missing crew.

The crew was made up of five Spaniards, two Portuguese and two Indonesians. One of the missing sailors is a 28-year-old Spaniard who is enrolled at a professional fishing school in Gijón and had just begun an internship on the Santa Ana a few days ago.
