SEPTEMBER 23, 2013 — In another embarrassing incident that the cruise industry does not need, Princess Cruises' newest ship, Royal Princess, lost power in the Mediterranean yesterday with 3,594 passengers and 1,336 crew members onboard.

According to the cruise line, the power outage occurred at approximately 1:30 pm local time. An emergency backup generator was used to provide essential services such as toilets.

Reportedly, power was out for about three and a half hours before the ship, which was delivered by Fincantieri in June, resumed its passage to Naples.

The ship was set to reach Naples Tuesday. It will be met by engineers to carry out necessary repairs.

Today, Princess Cruises said that the current sailing would be canceled on arrival in Naples. In addition to a full refund and a 25% discount on a future cruise, all guests currently sailing aboard the Royal Princess would be flown home later this week, but would likely stay aboard the ship until at least Wednesday morning.

If approved approved by the cruise ship's flag state, Bermuda, the ship will head for Barcelona on Wednesday.
