Detyens awarded $8.45 million for T-AKE 5 drydocking

FEBRUARY 5, 2013 — Detyens Shipyards Inc., North Charleston, S.C., is being awarded an $8,457,403 firm-fixed-price contract for a 55-calendar day shipyard availability for the regular overhaul and drydocking of dry cargo/ammunition ship USNS Robert E. Peary (T-AKE 5).  

Work will include inspecting the propeller shaft and stern tube; installing a reverse osmosis desalination unit to produce fresh water; installing a chlorpac unit; overhauling sea valves; and cleaning and painting the underwater hull.  

Peary’s primary mission is to operate as part of a carrier strike group, providing fuel, ammunition, and dry and refrigerated stores to support the Navy ships at sea, enabling them to remain underway for extended periods.  

The contract includes options which, if exercised, would bring the total contract value to $9,885,453.  Work will be performed in North Charleston, S.C., and is expected to be completed by May 2013.  Contract funds in the amount of $8,457,403 are obligated in fiscal 2013, and will expire at the end of the current fiscal year.  

This contract was competitively procured, with proposals solicited via the Federal Business Opportunities website, with one offer received.  Military Sealift Command Norfolk, Norfolk, Va., is the contracting activity (N32205-13-C-3010).
