The professional Maritime Security Operator should be a specialist proficient in all areas required to operate within a Maritime
Security Team, therefore ESS&SA (SA) Training Centre has developed a Maritime Firearm Competency course specifically for
potential or existing Privately Contracted Armed Security Personnel (PCASP) in the Maritime Security Industry.
The training will prepare any individual to safely and effectively handle fi rearms with a high degree of confidence and accuracy on
board a ship. At ESS&SA (SA) Training Centre we strongly believe in certifying only individuals who meet our exacting fi rearm competency
standards. Those attending our programme will be fully trained and assessed, in order to be awarded the Maritime Firearm Competency
Certificate, valid for 12 months. The 2 day training programme includes theory, practical demonstrations, exercises at the shooting range and a final shooting assessment
specifically geared to the maritime environment. The qualification shoot is either a pass or fail, individuals not passing on the first attempt will have to complete a re-shoots. An individual
who has an accidental or negligent discharge with a serviceable fi rearm during the course, which is not caused by a malfunction of the weapon, would automatically fail.

Our intensive 2 day programmes comply with and meet the guidance of International Maritime Organisation (IMO), MSC 1443,
Private Security Industry guidelines (PSC1*) and ISO 28007 (PAS) standard.

Course Syllabus
The Maritime Firearms Competency Course includes the following lessons:
• Marksmanship Principles
• Firearm Familiarization and Background Brief
• Safety Precautions & Safe Handling Drills
• Firearms Competency
• Immediate Action Drills & Reloads
• Use and Zeroing of Refl ex Sighting Systems and Mechanical
Sights
• Snap Shooting
• Use and Zeroing of Weapon Systems with the use of Laser
Bore Sighting
• Multiple Target Acquisition
• Shooting from Elevated and Various Positions Including effective use of Cover
• Accurate and effective target engagement at various distances
• Use of Complex Optics including Spotting and Zeroing
• Stripping, Assembly – Cleaning and Maintenance (in a maritime environment) and function of all fi rearms
• Application of Fire (weapon handling test)
• CQB Fundamentals
• Carriage of fi rearms above and below deck in accordance with
ship security plan
• Scenario Training
• Rules on the Use of Force (RUF) in compliance with BIMCO &
the 100 Series RUF
• Firearms handover in compliance with SOPs
• Qualification Shoot

Assessment:
• Theoretical Test
• Weapon handling Test
• Qualifi cation Shoot
Certifi cation is acquired by meeting our standards, formative and summative, throughout the course including the fi nal shooting
tests.
The live fi re training is conducted on a 100 m range where the learner will be exposed to the following commonly used 7.62mm and
5.56mm weapon systems:
• Benelli MR1 • M4/AR 15 • FN FAL/R1 • H&K MR308 • AK 47
• SAR M14 • Bolt Action Rifl e • Maverick 88 shotgun • Glock 17

On successful completion of the course you will be certifi ed as competent and current for 12 months from the date of issue.
